After a long time, the newspaper

Newspapers

At one time they were a daily pleasure. Growing up in a joint family there was a heavy load of newspapers that arrived to our house door. Tribune in English for my father and uncles, Urdu Tribune for my grand father and Punjab Kesari for everyone. The newspaper passed hands keeping everyone’s morning busy. And then the old newspaper was used for everything from cleaning to soaking up extra oil on the Sunday Poori.

Then we grew up and moved to the big city adding Times of India to our subscription. My brother the intellectual, upgraded us from Punjab Kesari to Economic times. The sepia colored ET was the pride of any well read business minded person and a strongly recommended to read for my MBA preparation. I just couldn’t get it. I had to force myself to read it thinking that a habit or fondness will develop in sometime. But the paper still stays elusive to me. The page on stock market is still gibberish and I detest it to my core. However the addition of city times like Chandigarh, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengalore times kept me entertained with its serving of gossip, local happenings, Bollywood and cartoons.

Then came online google and just internet news. With the information revolution the news was aplenty but also fake news, propaganda and just opinions. On the excuse of going environment friendly we shifted online. Then we moved countries where English newspaper was a privilege and not afforded by many.

Finally now back to India, I was reintroduced to newspaper again at our family home. The morning cup of tea and a crisp newspaper. Probably it’s my age, I am soon turning 40 or just the joys of a good living. Well whatever it is, whether it’s true, fake or political propaganda. I am enjoying my tea and the need of that international conflict, political crisis, bollywood or even the snippets on thievery, murder, scandal which gives me food for thought and my writing!

Welcome back to the newspaper in my life! And that means some interesting writings are coming up!
